Los pobres son los más afectados

Los países en desarrollo son más vulnerables que los países ricos a los cambios del clima y los pobres están más expuestos a los fenómenos climáticos severos, como inundaciones, sequías y tormentas.

Se prevé que el cambio climático generado por las actividades humanas aumente la variabilidad climática e impacte de forma negativa en la productividad agrícola en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales; reduzca aún más la cantidad y la calidad del agua en la mayoría de las regiones áridas y semiáridas; aumente la incidencia del paludismo, el dengue y otras enfermedades transmitidas por vectores en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales, y degrade los sistemas ecológicos y su biodiversidad.
Además, el aumento del nivel del mar a causa del alza esperada en las temperaturas podría provocar el desplazamiento de decenas de millones de personas que viven en zonas bajas, como los deltas de los ríos Ganges y Nilo y poner así en peligro la propia existencia de los pequeños estados insulares.

El nivel de acidez de las aguas de los mares ha subido como resultado del aumento del CO2 atmosférico, lo que se observa claramente en el Océano Antártico y en el del Polo Sur, poniendo en riesgo la cadena alimentaria al igual que los arrecifes coralinos y las comunidades costeras que dependen del mar para su sustento y su vida.
